Files without a header

When a file has no header line, its columns are named A, B, C…. These are placeholders, shown greyed and in italics.

If row 1 is really the header

Sometimes a header line is read as an ordinary row. When row 1 looks like column names, Smart CSV offers to fix it:

• On the import check card: Use row 1 as header.
• Later, a card at the bottom says No header row, with Use row 1 as header. Row 1 becomes the column names; a message offers Undo.
• Any time: + or Manage columns → Use row 1 as header.

Name the columns yourself

Select a column and tap its name again, or use Layout or Manage columns. The first time you name a column in such a file, Smart CSV asks where to keep the names:

• Add header row: the names are written as the file’s first line next time you write the file. Columns you haven’t named are written as their letter.
• Keep in SmartCsv only: the file stays without a header; the names live in the app. Change your mind later in Manage columns → Add header row to file.

Elsewhere

• Charts and PDFs call an unnamed column Column B.
• In the PDF export, Layout → Header row turns the row of column names on or off.
• The assistant only sees column names, so while they’re still A, B, C it offers Name columns first.
• Column widths, layout and types are never copied from another file, and this file’s are never copied to others. Types are only what Smart CSV detects.
